Desserts are often considered as a treat and they deserve to be seen as such. But as treats, it only seems right to eat them moderately, not every single night. Only when you choose the latter will eating desserts be bad for you.

What Desserts Are We Talking About?

You could say desserts are not totally bad, but only if you’re referring to nuts, dark chocolates, and fruits. In this article, though, we’ll be discussing the indulgent kinds of desserts, including ice cream, cakes, and cookies, which can increase your risk of diabetes and obesity. What else can you expect from white flour, trans fat, sugar, and butter combined?

Eating desserts may not be as bad for people who spend most of their day being extremely active and eating only low-sugar meals, according to a nutrition expert. Even then, sugar-loaded desserts contain empty calories that might not harm you because of your healthy lifestyle, but they can’t help you either.

What Makes Eating Desserts Bad?

Experts say one of the top culprits that make eating desserts bad for your health is added sugar. This refers to the sugar not naturally present in the food you eat. For instance, fruits and dairy products contain natural sugars such as lactose and fructose. On the other hand, flavored yogurt has natural sugars mixed with added sugars to augment its sweetness. What’s worse is that these products usually have high amounts of added sugars. They are bad because they are linked to increased blood pressure levels, abnormal blood lipids, uncontrollable inflammation, and heart disease.

The American Heart Association (AHA) said that women must only consume up to six teaspoons of added sugar. On the other hand, it is around nine teaspoons as a limit for men.

The problem is that most deserts you can buy commercially have a lot of added sugars in them, which is when you can say that eating desserts is bad for you. You might be able to avoid them if you make your food from raw materials. Otherwise, you’re unknowingly consuming artificial sugar from salad dressing, ketchup, bread, soup, and more.

What to Do About Cravings for Desserts?

Now, you know how bad eating desserts can be for you, but this should not mean quitting eating them right away. The more you prohibit yourself from doing, or in this case, eating something, the more you’ll want it. Even if you tell yourself that you will only eat desserts during the weekend after a long week’s work and on occasions that deserve to be celebrated, you might not be able to hold yourself back.      

To get your mind off of the desserts, give in. Just make sure to enforce portion control and straighten your negative dessert habits. Instead of eating your usual five cookies after dinner, three scoops of ice cream, or a large slice of pie, try to cut these amounts down until you feel satisfied with eating less.

And it helps to put obstacles between you and grabbing seconds by placing the cake back in the box and the refrigerator or storing the cookie back in the jar and hiding it at the back of the highest cupboard. This can discourage you from helping yourself to another serving, allowing you to control how much dessert you eat.

If you really want desserts, try making some at home because it will be healthier and prepared with proper portion control than those sold commercially. You can find healthier ingredients and not feel guilty about eating desserts.
